It was really interesting talking to you all today on BBC Radio about your strange experiences and trying to explain some of your intriguing stories. It is absolutely amazing how many people have a ghost story to tell – even some of the skeptical presenters had a spooky true story to share! According to a BBC report 42% of Britons think ghosts, phantoms and other supernatural apparitions really exist.
One of the most important points raised in the last show was our discussion about the difference between ghosts and spirits. Most people think they are the same but many argue that ghosts are simply vibrations left in a place, an atmosphere that replays a recording of past events when a clairvoyantly sensitive person is nearby. According to this theory, ghosts are not conscious and you should have no fear of them.
This theory would also account for the fact that many people’s experiences of ghosts are exactly the same. Seeing a grey lady at the top of the stairs or a phantom horseman beneath a bridge and so on is simply an awareness of historic events that happened there in the past. These stories get exaggerated with telling but the actual sighting – intriguing as it may be – is harmless.
Spirits are not ghosts. You are a spirit now – living in a human body. At death, your spirit leaves your body and enters another plane of existence that some call Heaven or the Spirit World. Sometimes spirits are able to communicate to the living through a medium or give proof in other ways such as spirit photography.
There are also mental phenomena that can be confused with ghosts. For example stories of communications through a Ouija board may be more about telepathy and the shared energy of the sitters than any spirit or ghostly communication. Again stories get exaggerated and elaborated but what is really happening is that a group of excited people are sharing their thoughts through telepathy and with it their fears. This results in the glass spelling out messages that can be very frightening.
